I was undeterred by this. That night I took a shovel and hammer and clambered down into the catacombs where the dead were buried. I walked around the foul smelling tunnels looking for a recently deceased person. I found a site still wet with mortar. I swung the hammer over and over again at the burial. After hours, I was able to pull the corpse out. I slide the man carefully into a large sack. I slung him over my shoulder and returned to the surface. That night I dissected him layer by layer. No man ever before saw the innards of man as I have. The discoveries I made that night I carefully recorded. The biggest of what I discovered was that blood was pumped throughout the body, explaining bleeding.
The year 1482 marked huge change in my life, for the past two years Lorenzo de’ Medici employed my services as a musician, artist, and an engineer. One of my favourite instruments I played there was a silver lyre in the shape horse head. It was seemingly a normal day when Medici summoned me.
“Leonardo come sit with me.” Lorenzo said with a smile. I walked over and sat on the chair opposite to his.
“Why have you brought me from my work?” I asked Medici. Lorenzo only smiled.
“I have made a deal with the duke of Milan to send you there to ensure peace between our two states. You will leave within the month.”
That was all he needed to say. I nodded and began to write a letter to the Duke of Milan. I told him of my artistic and musical skill. I also told him that I am an engineer and that I could build machines to dry moats and destroy infantry with machines on horseback. I was sent to Milan with my assets. On arrival I sketched brilliant machines with cannons mounted on a swivel, I sketched cannons with 33 barrels divided into three groups, and moat drying machine as promised. We never got around to building these ideas as I was chiefly employed sculpting and painting many works for the Duke. One of my biggest projects was painting "The Last Supper" for the monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, the monks who oversaw the work often times rushed me, but I took my time and completed the job. I enjoyed my work in Milan until the French invaded. The French troops overthrew the Duke of Milan and used many of my works as target practice. I was torn in two, should I stay in Milan, or flee?
